Inspired by Facebook's new Timeline update, this is a timeline about the history and formation of the ORT organization and its' subsequent worldwide growth.

1880 - ORT is founded in St. Petersburg, Russia by 3 men, SamuelPolyakov, Horace de Gunzburg and Nikolai Bakst. Their intention is to help millions of poor Russian Jews become trainedand educated in various skills and trades. The acronym stands for Obshestvo Remeslenofo Zemledelcheskofo Truda,which translates to: The Society for Trades and Agricultural Labour.

1909 - ORT adapts their programs to prepare Jews for areasin the workforce that need trained artisans influenced by the industrializationof Russia, ORT teaches workers automotive training

1920s-1930s - in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania ORT formsprograms to teach trades to youths, and sets up vocational courses for adults

Soviet Union – helps move Jewish peopleonto land as farmers

1921 - ORT becomes international in membership as well asoperations, World ORT is founded in Berlin
1921 - American ORT Society is formed in New York City, in 1922 it becomes knownsimply as American ORT
1927 - Women’s American ORT is formed by, Mrs. Jacob Panken, Florence Dolowitz and Anna Boudin. Both American ORTorganizations are established for fundraising reasons and are instrumental in gettingfunds for ORT schools and training programs

1939 - Many of ORT’sprograms continue past September, after the invasion of Poland and the start ofWorld War II

LA ORT College Teams up with El Proyecto WorkSource

Los Angeles ORT College was recently selected for participation with El Proyecto WorkSource to assist in the training of their clients in Medical Billing skills. This project is being funded by the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA), the replacement for the Job Training Partnership Act.

El Proyecto is a non-profit organization located in Sun Valley, CA. Originally formed in 1971, this organization was created to provide a variety of services to various areas in LA, including the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles. Along with assisting the community through health and medical aid, at-risk youth programs, and helping those with substance abuse and mental health issues, this group also works to provide training and employment for those seeking work. They are a certified operator for Los Angeles City as well as Los Angeles County. Each year the WorkSource Center helps over 5,000 people discover jobs and assists over 150 businesses.

The Workforce Investment Act was created in 1998, under the second term of the Clinton administration. This act was created in an effort to encourage businesses to work more with the WorkForce Development Service, on a state and local level. Presently this Act helps fund workforce education as well as career direction programs. The WIA’s goal is to assist people seeking employment, from those laid off from their jobs to youths, and is meant to help reduce welfare dependency and provide other work-related services.

The selection of Los Angeles ORT College to work with El Proyecto is due to the recognition of LA ORT’s reputation for not only quality education and training, but also because of its’ notable achievements in job and career placement for ORT graduates. Tips for Writing a Stand Out Résumé

With the job market the way it is, it can be hard to stand out from the crowd when applying for a job. With Los Angeles ORT College on your résumé, prospective employers will know that you not only have the education but the experience you need for the job.

Writing a résumé can be tricky for many. This paper is a potential employers’ first insight into your qualifications and you want to make sure it represents you well. Some tips on writing a good résumé are:
Keep it simple. Refrain from using fancy font even if you think it looks pretty, it may be hard to read for some people and a hiring agent might not make it through the whole thing. Using the standard Times New Roman font will suffice, with black font on white paper ideally, also-
Don’t make it too long. 1 page is ideal, 2 is ok if the information you are adding is important for the job you are seeking.
Include your qualifications. Put in relevant information for the job you are applying for, but don’t inflate your résumé in an effort to look good. Add any achievements, certificate, or awards you might have earned or won that you think the employer will find noteworthy.
Pay attention to important words. Try and mention key words from the job ad or description of the position you are applying for into your content or position titles that you have held, if applicable.
No need write down your life story. The hiring manager does not want to see personal information unless it will help you with the job, or unless they ask for it.

How to Prepare for a Career Fair

Career Fairs are a great opportunity for those seeking jobs, they allow you to meet with a variety of employers in one place on a specific day. To find out when a career fair will be in your area next, just search 'job fair' or 'career fair' with your desired city name in your online search engine of choice. But once you find a job fair you would like to attend, how do you prepare for it?

To start, try and find out what employers will be attending the fair, some career fair websites will list some, or all, of the businesses that will be in attendance. You can then search the internet for their website or other information on the employer.

These fairs can sometimes bring hundreds or even thousands of potential employers, so they provide a wonderful chance for you to look for jobs you desire or give you the possibility to meet with hiring managers at businesses you might normally overlook. These fairs often allow you the chance to view different opportunities, maybe there is a job out there you are perfect for but didn't even know it!

Job fairs also offer the chance to have on-the-spot interviews, and it is not always companies who attend. Individuals, government jobs agencies, and sometimes non-profits looking to hire come to find employees at these fairs. A few tips if you plan on visiting a career fair are:

Bring multiple copies of your resume – keep them in a folder or binder so they don't
get wrinkled or dirty.

Tips For Filling Out Your FAFSA

It’s the beginning of a New Year! That means new resolutions, new diets to shed those pesky holiday pounds, and for new or current students it means it’s time to fill out your FAFSA form! The new 2012-2013 FAFSA application is now available.

What exactly is the FAFSA? It stands for Free Application for Financial Student Aid, and is a form provided by the U.S. Department of Education that helps determine if a potential or current college student is eligible for government financial aid. When you fill out your FAFSA you are not just applying for one grant or loan though, there are many state and federal financial programs that are offered.

You can fill out the form online on the FAFSA website, or fill out a paper form and mail it to the FAFSA office. The form can be a bit daunting and confusing ,so we’ve compiled a few tips to help you get started:

-Make sure your paperwork is in order

Whoever is filling out the FAFSA, whether it is you or someone filling it out for you, you must have the appropriate paperwork. These are current financial records, last year’s tax forms, and other documents as listed here on their website.

-Check your work!

Like they always stress in school when you’re working on a paper or other important form, make sure you check to make sure you have filled out all of the information on the form completely and accurately. One mistake or omission could mean thousands of dollars less than what you would have been awarded had you filled everything out correctly! If you submitted the form online you are able to fix or change information here, but the change will take a few days for the government to process. If you mail the form in it’s a good idea to make photocopies of it or to scan it so you know exactly what you wrote in.

-File the form ASAP

There are deadlines for the FAFSA form, so make sure you pay attention! But the best way to make sure your form will be received and processed in time is to fill out and submit the form as soon as possible.

-FAFSA is free

The first ‘F’ in FAFSA stands for ‘Free’- which means that you should not be paying anything to file or fill it out. There are professional services and people you can choose to pay who can complete the form for you, but for no cost you can contact the Financial Aid Counselor at your school of choice for help, search the internet for tips, or directly contact the FAFSA staff. ESL (English as a Second Language) at LA ORT College

Los Angeles is a virtual melting pot of different cultures, ethnicities, and religions! People from all over the world congregate in LA, whether it be to work, vacation, or to pursue creative interests. While here they are exposed to foods, music, beliefs and religions from a variety of cultures. But one thing that can hinder the process of getting to know someone from a foreign land is the language barrier. How many times have you had a miscommunication with someone just because you did not have the common ground of a mutually spoken language?

There is also the issue of finding a job in LA when you do not speak English. Many companies and businesses require at least some basic understanding of the English language, most prefer you to speak it well, if not fluently. At LA ORT college our English as a SecondLanguage (ESL) program will give you the necessary tools and skills to understand, speak, and write in English.

Do you have a friend or loved one who struggles with English? This program can benefit them not only at home and in English-speaking societies, but may help them find a job or perhaps get a promotion due to their better grasp of the language!

When you apply for entrance into the program we require that you take written and oral placement tests. Don’t worry, you won’t be graded on them! These help us determine at what level of the program you will be placed, and your oral skills are a large factor in determining your placement since the program is about communication.

A few of the skills the program will teach you are:

-spelling and grammar

-pronunciation

-resume writing

-interviewing

-computer and language software

-reading and writing

-communication skills

Though the ESL program at LA ORT puts a significant amount of focus on oral communication, it still gives you all of the knowledge needed when learning the English language. Our program is designed to teach new language skills at each level as well as reinforcing what you have learned at the previous levels. We also focus on helping with social skills, such as studying holidays and learning about the issues one can face when living in a multi-cultural city like Los Angeles. We will help prepare you for the job market, by teaching things like how to make a resume and what to expect in interviews, and upon completion of the program you will earn a diploma.

The Pharmacy Technician Program at LA ORT

At Los Angeles ORT College we offer a variety of majors in which you can earn diplomas or degrees. One of the diploma programs we have is for pharmacy technician. What exactly does a pharmacy technician do? Think of the job as pharmacist support. Technicians work under the supervision of pharmacists and perform tasks such as:

receive and fill patient prescriptions
weighing, counting and measuring medicine for the patient
labeling the prescriptions
cash handling
caring for patient records

Another positive for this job is that the field has recently been experiencing an increase in popularity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a part of the US Department of Labor, employment numbers in this profession are growing rapidly. The average growth rate for employment in this field is expected to surpass the average growth rate of many other careers.

Though position advancement is limited, since most pharmacy technicians work 40 hours or less this allows time to further your educational studies. But that is not to say there are not opportunities for growth within this field. You may have the opportunity to be promoted to supervisors or other types of technicians, and some people choose to take on more schooling and become pharmacists.

Some places pharmacy technicians might be employed are at retail or private pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, outpatient hospitals, or online pharmacies. The average starting salary is $19,000 but can vary and increase depending on experience.

The Economy is not in Recession for ORT Graduates

The recent down turn in economy and the persisting recession has raised the unemployment rate in California in excess of 12%. Many companies are laying off their highly paid and highly skilled employees to reduce their expenses. At the same time individuals with low or no skills do not seem to find any jobs.

Since the start of the recession in 2008, companies have reduced the hiring of highly educated and highly experienced employees, because they cannot meet the salary expectation of these individuals. However, to do the job, the employers cannot hire inexperienced workers to perform the tasks that require a certain level of knowledge and skills.

Recent graduates of short-term training programs and 1- to 2-year associate degree programs from reputable colleges are being hired by companies, because of their reasonable salary expectations and proven knowledge and skills as evidenced by their certificates or degrees.

The video “Heritage” highlights three proud parents who each had a child attend LA ORT College.

Jimmy’s father immigrated to America with the hope of providing a better life for his children. After developing a love of computers at a young age, Jimmy was able to realize his dream and found a job in his desired field of choice, after earning a diploma from ORT!

Jenny used to dress up as a nurse when she was a child, and when she grew older she decided to follow in her own mother’s footsteps and went to ORT College. Even while working a day job and taking classes at night she was still able to finish her ORT schooling and is now a working nurse.

Mark spent 3 years taking classes at a community college, but he was unable to figure out what he wanted to study. He finally gave ORT College a try and in 2 years he had not only a diploma, but a job as well! His dad talks about how even though he was not able to get the education he wanted, he is so proud that Mark did.

What do Mike, Katherine, Flora and all of the other people in this video have in common? They are all thankful for ORT College!

ORT has such a diverse community of students, and in our video “Facesof ORT,” former and current students talk about what ORT gave them to be thankful for. They faced challenges like not being able to speak English well, or they had confusion about what to do with their life, or had no computer or internet skills. ORT was able to help with all of these things.

Some of the reasons these students love ORT is because of the great teachers, and because the help and encouragement they found at ORT makes it feel like a family. ORT helped some build self esteem and others find jobs. People from a variety of races and religions enroll in ORT every year. What unifies all of them is the desire for higher learning and the wish to join the workforce as educated individuals.

The second part of J-Reports’ ORT video talks about some history of Los Angeles ORT, and its’ current focuses as well as the types of programs you can find at the school today.

ORT came to Los Angeles in 1985, and though it started out as a school whose primary purpose was to provide language training, its’ curriculum now encompasses a variety of studies. Students are able to get degrees in accounting or medical office management, or diplomas to become pharmacy technicians or work on computer graphics, and those are only a few of the amazing programs we offer!

One of our goals is to find occupations that are in high demand and to get people trained efficiently and quickly so that they can join the workforce. We want to give people the best skills training possible in order to help them find employment sooner rather than later!

Even though the school started out as a mainly Jewish dominated student body, we are now a diverse campus, welcoming anybody and everybody. In order to retain our association with our Jewish roots we do require cultural and Jewish studies in our programs. We feel that this speaks for the quality of programs offered as well as helps play a preventative role in anti-semitism. Watch a fascinating interview from J-Report by Brad Pomerance, with Director of Admissions for Los Angeles ORT Fred Keivanfar on YouTube. Part 1 of the report discusses the history of ORT.

Did you know that “ORT” comes from a Russian acronym that when translated to English stands for “Organization for Educational Resources and Technological Training”? ORT has been in existence for over 130 years and is active in 55 countries. It was founded in Russia in 1880 and was an important resource for the Jewish community during the first and second World Wars. The Nazis even allowed ORT to function in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. ORT thought it was important for Jews to be educated and informed on how to be successful in different trades, even while living in concentration camps.

Over the last 20 years ORT’s focus has still been to help the Jewish community, especially in Third World countries, teaching people skills and giving them the resources needed to be successful in their lives. They were even around when the Soviet Union fell to help Jews in the commonwealth states.

But they also have been working in the United States dealing with Jewish as well as non-Jewish societies, teaching people skills and giving them the resources to be valuable assets to their communities. They place high importance on the value of education, skills and training to contribute to a better society.

Decide what you want to do.

Unlike four-year universities, technical schools are designed to serve students who know what career they want to pursue. Before you apply for technical school, try to determine the field you want to enter—computer graphics or medical office management, for example.

Schedule an interview.
